With the R3, Yamaha finally woke up for a deep slumber after launching the R15. The new R3 has given a lot of hope to enthusiasts and rumors suggest that the company will soon launch a naked version of the R3 which is known as the MT-03. At the same time though, the MT15 has now been revealed and is based on the R15. Are we getting somewhere?
I managed to catch two Yamaha units on test today in Delhi. The interesting part is that the rear seemed a lot like the MT-03. As I overtook them, what surprised me was the headlamp design in my XUV’s rear view mirror. This is exactly how the M15 looks like – sharp and aggressive. Does this mean Yamaha India is specifically working on an all-new Indian spec naked with looks borrowed from the M15?
Look at the side profile and the massive plastic tank extensions are something that the MT03 does not have. These bikes also did not have an engine belly, something that the MT03 and MT15 have.
Also, as seen in the images and the video, these units also wear a proper rear tyre hugger which is not seen on international versions. This is a regulation from the Indian government which hints at a possible launch this year itself.
Yamaha India seems to have made/assembled over 100 units already as per this image. You see the marking on the rear hugger as Frame no 193 and Engine no 106. The marking also suggests the bikes were out on “road endurance”.
Good times ahead for bikers in India? The R3 retails at Rs 3.6 lakh (ex-showroom) which means we can expect the MT03 (incase this indeed is a better looking MT03) to sell for about Rs 3.2 lakh (ex-showroom), thereby undercutting the Kawasaki Z250.
