AMT or automated manual transmission cars are the flavor of the season. The credit must go to Maruti Suzuki for coming out with affordable automatics which also shattered the age old myth of automatics lowering performance and as well as fuel economy.
The next model to join the line-up of AMT cars in India will be the Renault Kwid 1.0 – bookings are unofficially open which means the car will go on sale this month at an expected price of Rs 4.2 lakh for the 1.0 RXT and Rs 4.33 for the 1.0 RXT (O) variant, prices being ex-showroom Delhi.
The Kwid AMT will only come with the bigger 999cc engine that puts out 70 bhp of power and 91 Nm of torque. The AMT version will deliver same fuel economy as the manual version which means it will come with a certified figure of 23.01 kmpl as per ARAI. Performance is also expected to remain similar.
Renault calls this unit as the Easy-R AMT. This is a 5-speed unit and comes with three driving modes via the Shift Control Dial. You can switch between Reverse, Neutral and Drive. However, unlike other AMT options, you cannot shift gears manually. Also, there is no gear lever so that also frees up space between the front two seats.
The Renault Kwid 1.0 AMT will take on rivals like the Maruti Alto K10 AGS which starts at Rs 4.08 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. If you want a more ‘powerful’ automatic car with almost zero running costs, have a look at the new 4-door Mahindra e2o Plus
