Volkswagen isn’t enjoying a good time in the Indian car market. At 4060 units in January 2017, they are the 9th largest car manufacturer in India and hold just 1.6% of the market share. But I love their enthusiasm and the fact that they are constantly thinking about launching cars that we love. The GTI for example!
Next in line is the beautiful (SUVs can be beautiful too) Tiguan that will take on models like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. The Tiguan will be 5-seater SUV and will come powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine putting out 177 horses and 350 Nm of torque. A 7-speed DSG gearbox will be standard and VW will also offer all-wheel drive with the Tiguan.
To be launched in the next 30-45 days, the Tiguan will be assembled right here in India. When launched, it will be the most expensive Volkswagen on sale in India. In July, Volkswagen will also launch the Passat in India – this model was discontinued in 2013. Coming back to the Tiguan, it was first showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and is VW’s first SUV to make use of the flexible MQB platform – this has helped the Tiguan to shed about 50 kilos.
Rs 30-35 lakh, as per Autocar India, is a lot of money for the Tiguan. I say this because internationally, it competes with cars like the Hyundai Tucson. That said, its a capable car. Have a look at this review
